Ingredients

  • 2 cups flour
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 1 cup chopped walnuts
  • 1 cup honey
  • 1/2 cup melted butter
  • 2 eggs
  • 1 tsp baking soda
  • 1/2 cup warm milk
  • 1/2 cup water for syrup
  • 1/2 cup sugar for syrup
  • 2 tbsp honey for syrup

Instructions

Prepare the Batter

  • Take a big bowl. Add melted butter and sugar. Mix until smooth. Add eggs and honey. Stir everything well.

Mix the Dry Ingredients

  • In another bowl, add flour and baking soda. Slowly mix this into the wet bowl. Stir until you get a thick batter.

Add Walnuts and Milk

  • Add the chopped walnuts and warm milk. Mix slowly until all things blend well. The batter should look soft and sticky.

Bake the Cake

  • Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease a baking pan with butter. Pour the batter into the pan and spread it evenly. Bake for 30 minutes or until the top turns golden brown.

Make the Syrup

  • In a small pot, add water, sugar, and honey. Cook it on medium heat. Stir until sugar melts. Let it boil for 5 minutes, then cool a bit.

Add Syrup to Cake

  • When the cake is ready, cut it into small squares while still warm. Pour the warm syrup over it. Let it soak for about 20 minutes.

Serve and Enjoy

  • Once the syrup is soaked in, your Shendetlie is ready. You can eat it warm or at room temperature.

Notes

  • Use fresh, good-quality honey.
  • Don’t bake for too long.
  • Let the syrup soak in completely.
  • Toast the walnuts before adding them for more flavor.
  • Cut the cake before pouring syrup for better soaking.
