Ingredients

  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 1 small onion chopped
  • 3 cloves garlic minced
  • 1 can 28 oz crushed tomatoes
  • 1 can 6 oz tomato paste
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon sugar
  • 1 teaspoon dried basil
  • 1/2 teaspoon oregano
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1/2 teaspoon red pepper flakes optional
  • 1/2 cup water
  • 1 tablespoon chopped parsley

Instructions

Heat the Oil

  • Put a saucepan on medium heat. Add olive oil and let it warm.

Cook Onion and Garlic

  • Add chopped onion and garlic. Stir and cook for 2–3 minutes. They should turn soft and light brown. This gives the sauce a sweet flavor.

Add Tomatoes and Paste

  • Add crushed tomatoes and tomato paste. Stir them well together. The paste makes the sauce thick and creamy.

Add Seasonings

  • Add salt, sugar, basil, oregano, black pepper, and red pepper flakes. Stir again. The sugar balances the tomato flavor.

Add Water and Simmer

  • Add half a cup of water. Stir and bring to a boil. Lower the heat and let it cook slowly for 20 minutes. Stir sometimes so it does not burn.

Add Fresh Parsley

  • Add chopped parsley at the end. It gives color and a fresh taste.

Serve and Enjoy

  • Turn off the stove and let it cool for a minute. Your homemade Prego Spaghetti Sauce is ready. Pour it on cooked pasta and enjoy.

Notes

  • Use fresh garlic for strong flavor.
  • Add a little sugar to cut the sour taste.
  • Simmer longer for a deep, rich flavor.
  • Add butter at the end for a soft texture.
  • Mix cooked ground beef or sausage for a meaty version.
  • Sprinkle Parmesan cheese on top for extra taste.
