Ingredients

  • 1 can 15 oz tomato sauce
  • 1 can 6 oz tomato paste
  • 1/2 cup water
  • 1 tbsp olive oil
  • 1 small onion chopped small
  • 2 garlic cloves minced
  • 1 tsp sugar
  • 1 tsp dried oregano
  • 1/2 tsp dried basil
  • 1/4 tsp salt
  • 1/4 tsp black pepper
  • 1/2 tsp onion powder optional
  • 1/2 tsp garlic powder optional
  • 1/4 cup Parmesan cheese optional

Instructions

Heat the Pan

  • Put olive oil in a medium saucepan. Warm it on medium heat.

Cook the Onion

  • Add chopped onion. Stir 3–4 minutes. Onion becomes soft.

Add Garlic

  • Add minced garlic. Stir 1 minute. Do not burn.

Mix Tomato Paste

  • Add tomato paste. Stir 2 minutes. It gets darker.

Pour Tomato Sauce

  • Add tomato sauce and water. Stir well.

Add Seasonings

  • Add sugar, oregano, basil, salt, and pepper. Mix well.

Optional Powders

  • Add onion powder and garlic powder if using. Stir.

Simmer Sauce

  • Turn heat low. Cover partly. Simmer 15 minutes.

Blend for Smoothness

  • Use a blender for smooth sauce. Skip if you like chunky sauce.

Add Cheese

  • Add Parmesan cheese. Stir well. Makes sauce creamy.

Taste and Adjust

  • Taste the sauce. Add more salt or sugar if needed.

Serve Over Pasta

  • Pour sauce over cooked pasta. Stir to coat noodles.

Notes

  • Fresh garlic and onion are more suitable.
  • Burning garlic is not well; it becomes bitter.
  • Slowly boil to prepare sauce sweet.
  • Add sugar in order to decrease and make tomatoes less sour.
  • Blend provided you desire smooth sauce.
  • One can use fresh basil instead of dried basil.
