Equipment

  • Large mixing bowl
  • Whisk
  • Baking dish (9x13 inch)
  • Measuring cups
  • Measuring spoons
  • Knife
  • Cutting board
  • Oven
  • Spatula

Ingredients

  • 1 loaf French bread cubed
  • 8 large eggs
  • 2 cups whole milk
  • 1 cup heavy cream
  • 3/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 cup melted butter
  • 1/2 cup brown sugar
  • Powdered sugar for topping optional
  • Maple syrup for serving

Instructions

Prepare the Bread

  • Cut French bread into medium cubes. Spread them evenly in a greased baking dish. Let the bread sit slightly to become a little dry for better texture.

Mix the Custard Base

  • In a large bowl, whisk eggs, milk, cream, sugar, vanilla, cinnamon and salt. Mix until smooth. This mixture will create the soft custard for the casserole.

Pour Over Bread

  • Slowly pour the egg mixture over the bread cubes. Make sure all bread pieces are covered. Gently press bread so it absorbs the liquid evenly.

Refrigerate Overnight

  • Cover the dish with plastic wrap. Place it in the refrigerator for at least 6 hours or overnight. This helps flavors blend beautifully.

Add Topping

  • Before baking, mix melted butter and brown sugar. Spread it over the top of the casserole. This creates a sweet caramel-like crust while baking.

Bake the Casserole

  • Preheat oven to 350°F. Bake the casserole for about 45 minutes. The top should be golden brown and the center should be set but soft.

Cool and Serve

  • Let the casserole cool for 10 minutes before serving. Sprinkle powdered sugar on top. Serve warm with maple syrup for best flavor.

Notes

  • Use slightly stale bread for better texture
  • Soak bread overnight for rich flavor
  • Add cinnamon generously for warmth
  • Use full-fat dairy for creamy texture
  • Do not overbake the casserole
  • Let it rest before cutting
  • Add raisins for extra sweetness
  • Use real vanilla extract
  • Grease baking dish well
  • Serve warm for best taste
