Ingredients

  • 1 large round Italian bread loaf about 10 inches
  • ½ cup green olives chopped
  • ½ cup black olives chopped
  • ¼ cup roasted red peppers chopped
  • 2 tablespoons capers
  • ¼ cup olive oil
  • 1 tablespoon red wine vinegar
  • 1 teaspoon dried oregano
  • 1 garlic clove minced
  • 4 slices provolone cheese
  • 4 slices mozzarella cheese
  • 4 slices salami
  • 4 slices ham
  • 4 slices mortadella or bologna
  • Salt and pepper to taste

Instructions

Make the Olive Salad

  • Mix green and black olives, roasted peppers, capers, olive oil, vinegar, oregano, and garlic in a bowl. Stir well. This olive mix gives your sandwich its famous Muffaletta flavor.

Prepare the Bread

  • Cut the bread in half. Remove some bread from the center to make space. Save the extra bread for breadcrumbs.

Spread the Olive Salad

  • Spread half the olive salad on the bottom bread. Press it a bit so the flavor goes into the bread.

Add the Meat Layers

  • Place salami, ham, and mortadella slices evenly. This gives a rich and meaty taste.

Add the Cheese

  • Add provolone and mozzarella slices. The cheese adds creamy and soft texture.

Add the Remaining Olive Salad

  • Put the rest of the olive mix on top of the cheese. This adds more tang and flavor.

Close the Sandwich

  • Put the top bread over the filling. Press down softly to hold everything together.

Let It Rest

  • Wrap the sandwich in foil or plastic wrap. Let it rest for at least 30 minutes. This helps the flavors mix well.

Slice and Serve

  • After resting, unwrap it and cut into wedges. Serve and enjoy this tasty New Orleans sandwich.

Notes

  • Use strong bread so it doesn’t get soggy.
  • Let the sandwich rest before eating for better flavor.
  • Use good-quality olives for the best taste.
  • Add a bit more vinegar if you like tangy flavor.
  • Add chili flakes for a spicy touch.
  • You can also grill it lightly for a warm sandwich.
