Ingredients

  • 1 pound ground beef
  • 1 medium onion finely chopped
  • 1 green bell pepper finely chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic minced
  • 1 cup ketchup
  • 2 tablespoons tomato paste
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 tablespoon apple cider vinegar
  • 1 tablespoon brown sugar
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • ¼ teaspoon black pepper
  • 4 –6 hamburger buns

Instructions

Cook the Vegetables

  • Heat a skillet over medium heat. Add onions, green bell pepper and garlic. Cook for 4–5 minutes until softened and fragrant.

Brown the Ground Beef

  • Add ground beef to the skillet. Cook until browned, breaking it into small pieces with a spatula. Drain excess fat if necessary.

Add Sauce Ingredients

  • Stir in ketchup, tomato paste, Worcestershire sauce, apple cider vinegar, brown sugar, salt and pepper. Mix well to combine all flavors.

Simmer the Mixture

  • Reduce heat to low and simmer for 10 minutes. Stir occasionally so the sauce thickens and coats the meat evenly.

Prepare the Buns

  • While the meat simmers, lightly toast hamburger buns for extra texture and flavor. This prevents them from becoming soggy.

Assemble the Sloppy Joes

  • Spoon the meat mixture onto the toasted buns. Spread it evenly and serve immediately while hot and juicy.

Garnish if Desired

  • Add pickles, cheese or a few fresh herbs if desired. These extras enhance flavor and presentation. Serve with sides like fries or salad.

Notes

  • Use fresh vegetables for the best flavor.
  • Brown beef well for deeper taste.
  • Adjust sauce sweetness with brown sugar.
  • Simmer to thicken the sauce properly.
  • Toast buns to prevent sogginess.
  • Use Worcestershire sauce for rich, savory notes.
