Ingredients

  • Potatoes – 5 medium thinly sliced
  • Heavy cream – 2 cups
  • Whole milk – 1 cup
  • Butter – 2 tablespoons
  • Garlic – 2 cloves minced
  • Salt – 1 teaspoon
  • Black pepper – 1/2 teaspoon
  • Nutmeg – 1/4 teaspoon
  • Grated cheese optional – 1/2 cup
  • Fresh parsley – for garnish

Instructions

Prepare the Potatoes

  • Wash and peel the potatoes. Slice them thinly using a sharp knife. Try to keep slices even. This helps them cook evenly and gives a smooth layered texture.

Make the Cream Mixture

  • In a saucepan, add cream, milk, garlic, salt, pepper and nutmeg. Heat on medium. Stir gently until warm. Do not boil. This mixture gives rich flavor.

Grease the Baking Dish

  • Take your baking dish and spread butter evenly inside. This prevents sticking. It also adds flavor. Make sure to cover all sides for best results.

Layer the Potatoes

  • Place a layer of sliced potatoes in the dish. Pour some cream mixture over them. Repeat layers until all potatoes are used. This builds the classic scalloped texture.

Add Cheese (Optional)

  • Sprinkle grated cheese between layers if you like. It adds a rich and cheesy taste. This step is optional but very popular in many homes.

Bake the Dish

  • Preheat oven to 180°C (350°F). Cover the dish with foil. Bake for 40 minutes. Then remove foil and bake for 20 more minutes until golden on top.

Rest and Serve

  • Remove from oven and let it rest for 10 minutes. This helps the sauce thicken. Garnish with parsley and serve warm for best flavor.

Notes

  • Slice potatoes thin and even
  • Use fresh cream for better taste
  • Do not skip resting time
  • Add cheese for extra richness
  • Season each layer lightly
  • Use a wide baking dish for even cooking
  • Always preheat the oven
