Ingredients

  • 6 –8 whole vanilla beans
  • 1 cup vodka or bourbon for richer flavor
  • Glass jar or bottle at least 1 cup capacity

Instructions

Prepare the Vanilla Beans

  • Use a sharp knife to split each vanilla bean lengthwise. Do not remove the seeds.

Place Beans in Jar

  • Put the split vanilla beans in a clean glass jar or bottle. Make sure jar is dry.

Add Vodka

  • Pour 1 cup vodka over the beans. Beans must be fully submerged.

Seal the Jar

  • Close the jar tightly with a lid. Shake gently to mix beans and vodka.

Store in a Dark Place

  • Keep the jar in a cool, dark cupboard. Avoid sunlight for best flavor.

Shake Occasionally

  • Shake the jar once a week. This helps release the flavor from the beans.

Wait for Flavor

  • Let the vanilla extract sit for at least 4 weeks. Longer infusion gives stronger flavor.

Use or Gift

  • Strain if desired. Use in baking, coffee or give as a gift in a pretty bottle.

Notes

  • Use high-quality vanilla beans for best flavor.
  • Vodka is neutral; bourbon gives richer taste.
  • Keep the jar in a cool, dark place for months.
  • Shake the jar weekly for stronger aroma.
  • Top up vodka when it evaporates to reuse beans.
