Ingredients

  • 2 cans 5 ounces each tuna, drained
  • ½ cup mayonnaise
  • 1 teaspoon Dijon mustard
  • 2 tablespoons finely chopped red onion
  • 2 tablespoons finely chopped celery
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • 4 slices thick crusty bread like sourdough
  • 4 slices cheddar cheese
  • 1 tablespoon butter softened

Instructions

Preheat the Oven

  • Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper. This helps prevent sticking and makes cleanup easy.

Make the Tuna Salad

  • In a medium bowl, combine drained tuna, mayonnaise, Dijon mustard, onion and celery. Mix well. Add salt and pepper to taste. Set aside.

Prepare the Bread

  • Spread softened butter on one side of each bread slice. This will give a golden, crisp texture when baked.

Assemble the Tuna Melts

  • Place bread on the baking sheet, butter side down. Spread the tuna salad evenly on top. Place a slice of cheddar cheese over each sandwich.

Bake the Melts

  • Bake in the oven for 10–12 minutes until cheese is melted and bubbly. Bread should be crisp and lightly golden on edges.

Serve Warm

  • Remove from oven carefully. Let cool for a minute. Serve immediately with sides of your choice like salad or pickles.

Notes

  • Use freshly grated cheddar for better melting and flavor.
  • Drain tuna very well to avoid soggy bread.
  • Use crusty bread to hold the salad and cheese properly.
  • Spread butter evenly for golden, crispy bread.
  • Serve immediately for the best taste and texture.
