Ingredients

  • 1 pound ground beef
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 1 small onion finely chopped
  • 1/2 green bell pepper chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic minced
  • 1 cup tomato sauce
  • 2 tablespoons ketchup
  • 1 tablespoon tomato paste
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 tablespoon brown sugar
  • 1 teaspoon mustard
  • 1/2 teaspoon smoked paprika
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
  • 4 hamburger buns
  • 2 tablespoons chopped parsley optional

Instructions

Cook the Ground Beef

  • Heat olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Add ground beef and cook until browned. Break the meat into small pieces using a wooden spoon. Drain extra fat if needed.

Cook the Vegetables

  • Add chopped onion and bell pepper to the skillet. Stir and cook for about five minutes. The vegetables should become soft and fragrant. Add minced garlic and cook one minute.

Add the Sauce Ingredients

  • Pour tomato sauce into the pan. Add ketchup, tomato paste, Worcestershire sauce, and mustard. Sprinkle brown sugar, paprika, salt and black pepper. Stir everything together well.

Simmer the Mixture

  • Reduce heat to low. Let the mixture simmer gently for about 10 to 15 minutes. Stir occasionally to prevent sticking. The sauce will thicken and become rich.

Toast the Buns

  • While the meat cooks, lightly toast hamburger buns in a pan or toaster. Toasting gives the bread better texture and prevents it from becoming soggy.

Assemble the Sloppy Joes

  • Spoon the hot meat mixture onto the bottom half of each bun. Add the top bun. Sprinkle chopped parsley if you like extra color.

Serve and Enjoy

  • Serve the sloppy joes immediately while warm. The sauce should be thick, juicy, and full of flavor. This Ina Garten Sloppy Joes Recipe tastes best when fresh.

Notes

  • Use fresh ground beef for better flavor.
  • Do not skip sautéing the vegetables. It builds flavor.
  • Simmer the sauce long enough to thicken properly.
  • Toast buns to prevent soggy sandwiches.
  • Adjust sweetness by adding more or less brown sugar.
  • Add a little chili powder if you like heat.
