Ingredients

  • 2 pounds Yukon Gold or Russet potatoes peeled and thinly sliced
  • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter
  • 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
  • 1 ½ cups milk
  • 1 cup heavy cream
  • 2 cloves garlic minced
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • ½ teaspoon black pepper
  • ½ teaspoon nutmeg optional
  • 1 ½ cups shredded Gruyère or Swiss cheese
  • ½ cup grated Parmesan cheese
  • Fresh thyme for garnish optional

Instructions

Preheat Oven and Prepare Dish

  • Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C). Grease a 9x13-inch baking dish with butter or cooking spray. This prevents potatoes from sticking during baking.

Slice the Potatoes

  • Peel potatoes and slice thinly using a knife or mandoline. Even slices ensure they cook uniformly. Place slices in a large mixing bowl and set aside.

Make the Cheese Sauce

  • In a saucepan, melt butter over medium heat. Stir in flour and cook 1–2 minutes. Gradually whisk in milk and cream. Add minced garlic, salt, pepper and nutmeg. Cook until sauce thickens.

Layer Potatoes

  • Arrange a layer of potato slices in the baking dish. Pour a portion of the sauce over them. Sprinkle some Gruyère cheese evenly. Repeat layers until all potatoes, sauce, and cheese are used.

Top with Parmesan

  • Sprinkle grated Parmesan over the top layer for a golden, crispy finish. Ensure even coverage for a nice crust while baking.

Bake the Scalloped Potatoes

  • Cover the dish with aluminum foil and bake for 40 minutes. Remove foil and bake an additional 20 minutes until potatoes are tender and top is golden brown.

Serve and Garnish

  • Let potatoes rest for 5–10 minutes before serving. Garnish with fresh thyme if desired. Serve hot as a perfect side dish for dinner or holidays.

Notes

  • Use thin, even potato slices for uniform cooking.
  • Preheat oven to ensure even baking.
  • Use a mix of Gruyère and Parmesan for rich flavor.
  • Don’t overcook the sauce; it will thicken in the oven.
  • Let the dish rest before slicing for clean portions.
