Ingredients

  • 2 large onions thinly sliced
  • 2 tbsp butter
  • 1 tbsp olive oil
  • 1 tsp sugar
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1 cup sour cream
  • 1 cup mayonnaise
  • 1 tsp Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 tsp garlic powder
  • 1/2 tsp black pepper
  • Optional: chives for garnish

Instructions

Slice the onions

  • Peel and slice onions thin. Keep the slices even for even cooking.

Heat the pan

  • Heat butter and olive oil in a skillet over medium heat.

Cook the onions

  • Add onions to the pan. Stir every few minutes to avoid burning.

Add sugar and salt

  • Sprinkle sugar and salt over onions. This helps caramelize them faster.

Caramelize the onions

  • Cook onions for 20 minutes. They should be golden brown and soft.

Cool the onions

  • Remove the onions and let them cool. This keeps the dip smooth.

Mix sour cream and mayo

  • In a bowl, mix sour cream and mayonnaise until smooth.

Add onion flavor

  • Add cooled onions, Worcestershire sauce and garlic powder. Mix well.

Season the dip

  • Add black pepper. Taste and adjust salt if needed.

Chill before serving

  • Cover and chill for 1 hour. This helps the flavors blend.

Notes

  • Use sweet onions for better flavor.
  • Cook onions slowly for the best caramelization.
  • Let onions cool completely before mixing.
  • Chill the dip for at least one hour.
  • Use fresh garlic powder for a better taste.
