Ingredients

  • 4 boneless skinless chicken breasts
  • Salt and black pepper to taste
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 2 large eggs beaten
  • 1 1/2 cups Italian-style breadcrumbs
  • 1/2 cup grated Parmesan cheese
  • 1/4 cup olive oil
  • 2 cups tomato sauce homemade or store-bought
  • 1 1/2 cups shredded mozzarella cheese
  • 1/4 cup fresh basil leaves chopped (optional for garnish)

Instructions

Prepare the Chicken

  • Flatten the chicken breasts slightly for even cooking. Season both sides with salt and black pepper. This ensures tender and flavorful chicken.

Set Up Breading Station

  • Place flour in a shallow dish, beaten eggs in another and mix breadcrumbs with Parmesan in a third dish. This makes the breading process organized.

Coat the Chicken

  • Dredge each chicken breast in flour, then dip in eggs and finally coat with the breadcrumb mixture. Press gently so crumbs stick well.

Sauté the Chicken

  • Heat olive oil in a skillet over medium heat. Cook chicken until golden brown, about 3–4 minutes per side. Do not fully cook it yet; it will bake later.

Preheat the Oven

  • Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C). This ensures the chicken bakes evenly and melts the cheese properly.

Arrange in Baking Dish

  • Place the sautéed chicken in a baking dish. Spoon tomato sauce over each piece of chicken, making sure it is fully coated.

Add Cheese

  • Sprinkle shredded mozzarella on top of each chicken breast. Add a little extra Parmesan for a golden, cheesy topping.

Bake the Chicken

  • Bake in the oven for 15–20 minutes until chicken is cooked through and cheese is melted and bubbly. Avoid overbaking to keep chicken tender.

Garnish and Serve

  • Remove from the oven and sprinkle fresh chopped basil over the chicken for added flavor and color. Serve immediately while hot.

Notes

  • Flatten chicken evenly for consistent cooking.
  • Use fresh Parmesan for a richer flavor.
  • Do not overcrowd the skillet when sautéing chicken.
  • Let the chicken rest 5 minutes before serving.
  • Use a high-quality tomato sauce for best results.
