Ingredients
  

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 2 cups granulated sugar
  • ¾ cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 2 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1 ½ teaspoons baking soda
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup buttermilk
  • ½ cup vegetable oil
  • 2 large eggs
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
  • 1 cup hot water

For the Chocolate Frosting

  • 1 cup unsalted butter softened
  • 3 ½ cups powdered sugar
  • ½ cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
  • ¼ cup heavy cream

Instructions
 

Preheat the Oven

  • Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour two 9-inch cake pans.

Mix Dry Ingredients

  • In a bowl, whisk flour, sugar, cocoa, baking powder, baking soda and salt.

Add Wet Ingredients

  • Add buttermilk, oil, eggs and vanilla. Mix until smooth and well combined.

Add Hot Water

  • Slowly add hot water. Stir carefully until batter is smooth and thin.

Pour Batter into Pans

  • Divide batter evenly into the two prepared pans. Smooth the tops with a spatula.

Bake the Cake

  • Bake for 30–35 minutes. Check with a toothpick. It should come out clean.

Cool the Cakes

  • Let the cakes cool in pans 10 minutes. Then move to a cooling rack.

Prepare the Frosting

  • Beat butter until creamy. Add sugar, cocoa, salt, vanilla and cream. Mix smooth.

Assemble the Cake

  • Place one cake layer on a plate. Spread frosting evenly on top.

Top with Second Layer

  • Place the second cake layer on top. Frost the top and sides of the cake.

Smooth the Frosting

  • Use a spatula to smooth frosting. Decorate as desired.
