Ingredients

  • 4 tablespoons butter
  • 4 tablespoons flour
  • 2 cups milk
  • 1 cup chicken broth
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • ½ teaspoon black pepper
  • ¼ teaspoon garlic powder
  • ¼ teaspoon onion powder

Instructions

Melt the Butter

  • Put a saucepan on medium heat. Add the butter and let it melt. Stir so it doesn’t burn.

Add the Flour

  • When butter melts, add the flour. Whisk it well. This makes a smooth paste called a roux. Cook for two minutes until light brown.

Pour in the Liquids

  • Slowly add milk and chicken broth. Keep whisking so no lumps form. The mix will start to get thick.

Add the Seasonings

  • Add salt, pepper, garlic powder, and onion powder. Mix well. Taste it and change spices if needed.

Cook Until Thick

  • Let the gravy cook for about 5–6 minutes. Stir again and again until it is smooth and thick. When it coats a spoon, it’s ready.

Serve Warm

  • Turn off the stove and serve warm. It tastes best with chicken strips, mashed potatoes, or biscuits.

Notes

  • Use whole milk for more creaminess.
  • Keep stirring to avoid lumps.
  • To make it tasting add additional pepper.
  • Slow roasting of flour is the way to go to enhance taste.
  • A little milk may be added in case the gravy is too thick.
