Ingredients
  

  • Pearl onions peeled – 2 pounds
  • Unsalted butter – 3 tablespoons
  • All-purpose flour – 2 tablespoons
  • Whole milk – 1½ cups
  • Heavy cream – ½ cup
  • Salt – 1 teaspoon
  • Black pepper – ½ teaspoon
  • Nutmeg – ¼ teaspoon
  • Grated Parmesan cheese – ¼ cup

Instructions
 

Cook the Onions

  • Boil pearl onions in salted water for fifteen minutes. Drain well and set aside.

Melt the Butter

  • Melt butter in a skillet over medium heat. Do not let it burn.

Add the Flour

  • Whisk flour into melted butter. Cook for two minutes until smooth.

Pour in Milk and Cream

  • Slowly add milk and cream. Whisk constantly to avoid lumps.

Season the Sauce

  • Add salt, pepper and nutmeg. Stir gently until sauce thickens.

Add Onions to Sauce

  • Gently add cooked onions into the sauce. Mix until well coated.

Bake the Dish

  • Transfer mixture to a baking dish. Sprinkle cheese on top.

Finish in Oven

  • Bake at 375°F for fifteen minutes until bubbly and lightly golden.
