Ingredients

  • 1 loaf French bread cut into cubes
  • 5 large eggs
  • 1 1/2 cups milk
  • 1/2 cup heavy cream
  • 1/2 cup sugar
  • 1/4 cup brown sugar
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 2 tablespoons butter for greasing

Instructions

Prepare the Baking Dish

  • Grease a baking dish with butter. This prevents sticking and adds flavor. Spread the bread cubes evenly in the dish. Make sure they cover the base properly.

Make the Custard

  • In a bowl, whisk eggs, milk, cream, sugar and brown sugar. Add vanilla, cinnamon, and salt. Mix well until smooth. This mixture gives the casserole its rich taste.

Combine Bread and Custard

  • Pour the custard mixture over the bread cubes. Press lightly so all bread soaks the liquid. This helps the casserole become soft and creamy after baking.

Let It Rest

  • Cover the dish and let it sit for at least 20 minutes. You can also refrigerate overnight. This step allows the bread to absorb all the flavors properly.

Preheat the Oven

  • Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). A well-heated oven ensures even baking. This helps the casserole cook perfectly from inside and outside.

Bake the Casserole

  • Place the dish in the oven and bake for 40 to 45 minutes. The top should turn golden brown. The center should be set but still soft and moist.

Cool and Serve

  • Remove from oven and let it cool for a few minutes. Serve warm for best taste. You can add syrup or powdered sugar before serving.

Notes

  • Use slightly stale bread for better texture
  • Let the mixture soak well before baking
  • Do not skip the resting time
  • Use full-fat milk for richer flavor
  • Bake until golden but not dry
