Ingredients
  

  • Smoked sausage – 1½ pounds
  • Sauerkraut – 24 ounces drained lightly
  • Yellow onion – 1 large sliced
  • Apple – 1 medium sliced
  • Olive oil – 1 tablespoon
  • Brown sugar – 1 tablespoon
  • Caraway seeds – 1 teaspoon
  • Black pepper – ½ teaspoon
  • Dijon mustard – 1 tablespoon

Instructions
 

Preheat the Oven

  • Heat oven to 375°F. Lightly grease a baking dish to stop sticking during baking.

Prepare the Sausage

  • Slice sausage into thick pieces. Keep pieces even so they cook evenly.

Add Sauerkraut

  • Spread sauerkraut evenly in the baking dish. Do not press it too tightly.

Add Onion and Apple

  • Place onion and apple slices over sauerkraut. Spread them evenly for balanced flavor.

Season the Dish

  • Sprinkle brown sugar, caraway seeds and black pepper evenly over the mixture.

Add Mustard and Oil

  • Drizzle olive oil and mustard over everything. This adds flavor and moisture.

Place Sausage

  • Lay sausage pieces on top. Press gently so they sit into the sauerkraut.

Cover and Bake

  • Cover dish with foil. Bake for thirty minutes to soften flavors nicely.

Uncover and Brown

  • Remove foil. Bake fifteen more minutes until sausage browns and edges caramelize.

Rest Before Serving

  • Remove from oven. Let rest five minutes before serving for best taste.

Notes

  • Use good quality sausage
  • Drain sauerkraut lightly
  • Add apple for sweetness
  • Do not skip foil step
  • Let dish rest before serving
